Brewfest Mount Fiasco

For some reason I can’t get to the WoW forums today, but I’ve heard some unfortunate news (by way of WoW Insider).

Brewfest is a holiday event that occurs in October and which roughly mirrors the real life holiday Oktoberfest. Last year, characters on both the Horde and Alliance sides had the opportunity to redeem Brewfest tickets for special Brewfest Ram mounts.

Although these mounts do have unique colors, they are close enough to normal Dwarven Ram mounts that many Alliance characters were not particularly excited by the reward. But for Horde characters, this was our first and only chance to get a riding ram. (I personally worked my butt off to get a lovely ram for my orc main. But then I’m a little mount-obsessed.)

And there were hints that Blizzard would be correcting the mount imbalance with this year’s Brewfest, especially after the art for a Brewfest Kodo was found in the client data files. If both Alliance and Horde could choose from either a Brewfest Ram or a Brewfest Kodo — well, that would be just about perfect!

But today Blizzard activated Brewfest on the Public Test Realms in order to test out their changes before the event proper in October. And today we learned to our dismay that Brewfest Rams will only be available to Alliance characters, and Brewfest Kodos will only be available to Horde characters.

I haven’t heard yet if existing Horde characters with a Ram get to keep them (as I mentioned, I can’t seem to load the forums no matter what), but I can report that my orc still has hers on the PTR.

That’s a good sign. But it really doesn’t help my two additional Horde characters who already saved up their Brewfest tickets last year, but weren’t high enough level to complete the quest and get a ram. To add insult to injury, one of them is a Tauren … so she’s not even getting easier access to a kodo mount.

Oh, I will still be happy to have the opportunity to get a better looking kodo mount — the existing kodos are pretty plain — but a ram would have been so much cooler. I’m just not sure why Blizzard didn’t open the possibility to get either mount type to either faction. I’ll admit that I’m a collector, so I’m more concerned with my ability to get a mount than with the supposed rarity value of the mount, but especially given that a good many Horde characters already have the ram … It just doesn’t make sense to me.

  1. [...] only Horde characters can get the new Brewfest Kodo. But I’ve already ranted about it on Warcraft Mounts so I’ll just point you over there for [...]

To be fair, not only is this the PTR we’re dealing with, but Brewfest itself is still months away. It’s entirely possible this faction-restriction aspect could change by the time the live-realms get their Brewfest on.

*nod* That’s a good point. I wish I could get to the forums to see the post about this myself and see how certain they sound.

I have a NE hunter with the correct amount of tickets saved from brewfest but (like mania) she was too low level. Once i heard about this brewfest kodo, i was so happy! but it is SOO not fair that if rams = alliance and kodos = horde bc those horde already got the ram. both those mounts should be open to both factions. otherwise it is unfair on blizzards part…

  5. Ryno says:

They should switch it so Horde can get rams, and alliance can get kodos.

My gnome would look SO funny on a kodo too.

But that great thing about the PRT - this is the time to mention this sort of thing! And implant in the Blizzfolks’ ears “hey, wouldn’t it be fun if you did give us different mount options each year? and the horde/alliance mount awarding thing, we all kinda LIKED the fact that we could get the other faction’s mount!” Which means we will all be annoyed if only one faction gets a mount this year, as much as that sounds like alliance QQing - I actually didn’t mind that horde got the ram last year - I just assumed that alliance would get a horde mount in the future. If not the kodo at Brewfest…well, something, right?

  7. Sandfur says:

This is soooooo stupid!!!! i saved aaalll my tickets from last year because my main was too low a lvl for the ram, and now i won’t be able to get it!?!?!? if Blizzard makes Horde only able to get kodos….well lets just say i’m not going to be happy………..

  8. Cryptography says:

I had only recently hit level 40 last year, so I bought BOTH the Brewfest Ram and the Swift brewfest ram. The level 60 version sat unused in the bank until i hit 60.

I suggest anyone who is going to try for a mount this year save up at least 110 gold. I’ll be going back to get me a kodo or two!

Also remember you may be able to hit it at level 30 instead if the other changes are implemented.

  9. Marathonian says:

I’ll take a kodo, ram,or anything really. My main is a BE and I have yet to reach exalted with Undercity (despite having gone and done their noob zone right away and doing every quest I could find that gave UC rep also did the cloth donations),and I DESPISE hawkstriders!Stupidest looking mount the Horde gets.

  10. Kahlua says:

Bah i hope the implement kodos for allience :) A new brewfest mount each year yould be cool if both factions had acces to it. Next year it could be an allience mount again.. like a tiger, mecho strider or horse… that way it be possible to have the opperside factions mount.. I would not mind having an undead beer horse for my nelfs :D

I’m not surprised Blizzard managed to screw this up. Though the Brewfest Kodo is probably dull for horde too. I mean, to me, it looks alot like the Black War Kodo. Horde had easy access to a cross faction mount at 40, and they should still have that choice this year. Alliance should get what is fair and have a chance at a Kodo this year as well. Otherwise there is just no reason to do this event honestly. Allies aren’t really gonna be interested (well majority of allies) in a mount that looks like a regular IF ram. Horde probably aren’t interested in a Kodo that looks almost identical to a War Kodo.

Anyways, good luck mentioning it on the forums, Hortus has been deleting posts and threads all day that regard the Kodo, despite most being quite calm.

Good thing my druid already has Swift Brewram O.o
My CC hunter has a wolf, and personaly I like them much better than the rams so I’m okay.. But that really stinks that Horde might not be able to get rams!!! Plus, my dwarf would look funny on a Kodo..

Oh well, might change later, where can I find a pic of the Brewfest Kodo?

  13. quiquek says:

I really hope that both factions have access to both brewfest mounts, i’d love to see my dwarf getting on the Kodo ;)

Kodos are better looking than eleks anyway

Meh… I still stand by my view that the whole thing could have been far-easier avoided, had they just gone with a neutral and universal mount that didn’t wasn’t about the “you got your chocolate in my peanut butter/you got your peanut butter in my chocolate” argument that seems to permeate the whole Alliance/Horde-player rivalry.

Had the Brewfest mount been a Bull, a Bear, or a big Saint Bernard with a cask strapped to his neck, it would have been a lot better and worth getting than something that was ultimately gonna make everyone throw such a monumental hissy-fit, leading Blizz to instill this particular lockdown.

  15. Bunnyfer says:

Ohhh, now thats a mount I would have liked..

A big Saint Bernard with a cask strapped to his neck!!!

Yes, a nuetral mount would’ve been far better. I totally put my money on a Saint Bernard though lol, would’ve been great

Having a neutral mount would be great!!!! I SOOO vote the st bernard as well :D :D :D

Well, I for one did not play WoW for several months last year and wouldn’t you know it, it happen to fall within the Octoberfest last year. So i missed out on the ram for my hordies and even one for my NE on my alliance realm. I feel the same with alot of posts about it not being fair and what not. I loved how it gave horde a chance to get a new mount. Though, on my horde toons i would love to get the Wintersaber mount. I liked how blizz atleast gave horde a chance to get a mount that was new instead of the hawkstrider. Instance mounts are fun and i have been in kara 100’s of times with never seeing Atun’s drop nor any from any other instance. So i for one still hope, pray, wish that horde will get a option to rep grind for a special mount like the Alliance can in Everlook, but that horse has been beaten sooooo many times. The ram gave us something to look forward too this year but this new info brings regret for me leaving WoW to begin with. I do have the worst timing lol. Cheers to all and good luck to those in Wotlk.

I love my ram mount collection…

But sucks to be us, looks like it’s HOPS ONLY (AKA temporary mount change, like with the reindeer).

I adore my ram mount collection…

But sucks to be us anyway, looks like it’s HOPS only (AKA temporary mount change, like with the Christmas reindeer). And for me 2G and 20G hops did exactly the same thing, so don’t bother with the 20G ones, hm?

And they lost the Pink Elek and Wolpertinger Qs, which were 2 of the best Qs ever… Ergh. Suddenly I don’t feel so festive.

Oops, sorry for the double post.
